thieves + lessons learned

i recently recovered from a flu-like illness...in two full days. What did i do? i didn't take any antibiotics. i slept as much as i could. The only thing i added was applying thieves essential oil blend to my feet every few hours.

the day that i started to feel sick, i rushed out the door + did not apply thieves. as i usually do. during the day, i felt a little light-headed...and totally wished i had a bottle of thieves with me to apply and boost my immune system.  when i got home, i was already a mess.

my symptoms:
+ fever hanging around 101degF.
+ icky, nauseated feeling in the stomach
+ body achiness
+ tiredness

i felt so gross and throw-up-y, i immediately applied 2-3 drops of thieves to the bottoms of my feet+ headed to bed (not easy for a mother of two).  i applied thieves every time i woke up (which was about every 2-3 hours, since i'm still nursing a 5-month-old baby).  i also applied peppermint to help cool off my body.

i did not vomit during the illness.
my fever went down to 99degF after applying peppermint. (+ i could function for an hour or so + interact with my family before heading off to bed again.
of course, i wasn't eating much, but at least i was able to nurse my baby okay.

lessons learned about thieves:
+ don't ever forget to put thieves on in the morning before leaving the house.
+ diffuse thieves in the house everyday during cold + flu season.
+ while sick, it seems like applying thieves helps the body recover faster.

note about thieves: one of the essential oils in it is lemon + lemon is photosensitive (so never apply thieves to an area exposed to sun in the next 24 hours).

thieves + illness

thieves was the next oil I tried.  this essential oil blend is a mix of clove, lemon***, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary.

it came highly recommended by my oil friend, who touted its anti-bacterial, anti-microbial value, especially during flu season.

funny thing, my 2-year-old daughter happened to get sick over the weekend after i got thieves in the mail.  so, i used it...applying it to her feet every hour.

it really lifted her mood.  instead of being whiny and clingy, she was able to play + she was able to go to school without missing any days!

since then, we have diffused it every school day for 30 minutes.  and we apply thieves to all of our family's feet before we go out into crowds/school/work.

+ my husband has not gotten sick
+ applying it on a sore throat helped it not progress into a cold
+ my daughter has only missed 2 days of school (since mid-August)
+ my infant son has slept better if he is congested + I apply it

***lemon essential oil is sensitive to light, so only apply thieves on places not exposed to the sun, if you plan on being under the sun in the next 24 hours.

peppermint + plantar callous

peppermint essential oil smells like Christmas to me.  it is a good for easing pain + soothes digestion.

when I first got peppermint, I used it on my foot plantar callous (alternating with lemon), which was so raised it hurt.  I've had the callous for about three years + the peppermint helped ease the pain + reduced the bump.

I did notice that my baby (who I'm nursing) fussed more on the breast.  the web + the small Higley reference book (which is specifically for Young Living Essential Oils) says to stay away from peppermint because it can decrease milk supply.  after talking with several Young Living distributors, I found that the baby is fussy more due to the strong smell rather than milk supply decreasing.  now, I make sure I don't have it on my hands when I nurse + no problems!

1 drop of peppermint essential oil = 40 cups of peppermint tea

my husband loves the minty-fresh smell of peppermint.  this is his favorite oil.

lemon + firsts

lemon was the first Young Living Essential Oil I ever used.  I got a bottle of it free at an Essential Oils 101 class.  I'd never used essential oils before.  it was exciting to tip the little, dark, glass bottle + smell that sharp, refreshing, tangy aroma drip onto my fingers.

lemon essential oil is a powerful anti-oxidant (because it is made from real lemon rinds) + can be used to purify odors + sanitize your house.  it can also be used as a seasoning for cooking.

how I've used it so far...
+ on my plantar callous (bottom of my foot) to ease the pain (which has been there for 3 years + now it is considerably shallower)
+ in my water
+ in my daughter's water (when she was battling her UTI)
+ on my kitchen surfaces
+ in my baby's trash can (where smelly diapers are collected)

just make sure, when you use lemon topically on the skin, you keep it off of areas that will be exposed to sunlight in the next 24 hours.

lavender + love

as I wrote in my first experience with Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO), lavender was the prime miracle worker that helped me believe essential oils work.

lavender is one of the most versatile oils.

I've applied it...
+ on my daughter's lower abdomen and lower back to boost her immune system to help ease her discomfort from her UTI.
+ on my husband's wrists and the tops of his hands to ease his wrist pain from using the computer too much.
+ on my feet for calming
+ on my baby's skin for redness and itchiness (diluted with coconut oil)
+ on bruises to help the skin recover quickly
+ onto a damp washcloth in the dryer for fresh-smelling laundry (instead of dryer sheets)

we never go a day without using lavender in some way + it smells so nice!
